The mosquitoes are getting thick so April is Heartworm Awareness Month!  Heart 4493819.jpg worms are transmitted through a mosquito bite. Both dogs and cats are at risk of contracting the disease. The mosquito takes a blood meal from an infected animal and ingests a larval stage of the heartworm. The worm then develops and migrates to the mosquito's salivary gland. When the mosquito takes another blood meal, it injects its larvae into your pet which then develops and migrates to the pet's blood stream. Once the larvae hits the blood stream, it migrates to the right side of the heart where it matures to an adult and begins to replicate. As you could imagine, this causes disturbances in blood flow as well as pathology to the heart and vessels going to the lungs. This is a deadly disease but can be prevented by getting a simple injection every 6 month or taking an oral preventative monthly. The treatment is very rough on your pet and has its own set of complications. The American Heartworm Society recommends yearly testing and year round prevention. Your pet should be started on a preventative during their puppy vaccination visits. The sooner the better!!!!
