Are you planning a trip and are unable to take your pet? Animal boarding is one option, even for longer trips. Here at Perkins Veterinary Clinic in Stillwater, we provide pet boarding services.

Before you drop your pet off with us, however, there are a few things you should do. First, figure out your trip. How long will you be gone and what time will you return? You might need to board your pet for an extra night if you leave or return outside of the facility's hours.

Next, determine what vaccinations or licenses are required. No other questions matter if the business rejects your pet.

Questions to Ask a Pet Boarding Business

Ask questions about your pet's stay, starting with routine care such as feeding. Also ask questions about grooming if you plan to board your pet for more than a few days. Some important questions to ask include:

  • When do you feed pets?
  • Do you provide food or accept outside food?
  • How do you handle dogs who may be food aggressive?
  • Do you give treats?
  • Can I bring an item from home to comfort my pet?
  • Do you provide routine or emergency grooming? If so, what services do you offer?

Exercise is important for your pet's mental and physical health. But not every pet likes other pets and some facilities aren't set up to allow socializing. That’s why it’s important to ask the following:

  • How much playtime do pets receive and what does it look like?
  • Are pets ever unsupervised?
  • Can I board my pets in the same kennel?

Finally, inquire about medical and vet care.

  • Can you administer medication?
  • What happens if there's a medical emergency?
  • Have you ever had a preventable medical emergency?
  • Do you have a veterinarian onsite?

You may also want to look up reviews of animal boarding houses. However, facilities with less-than-spotless reputations may not be open, so prepare to find other sources.
