How Often Should Your Pet Visit the Veterinarian?

As a responsible pet owner, you make sure your pets visit the veterinarian for a pet exam on a regular schedule. Along with a proper diet and exercise, your visits to the vet are the most important thing you can do to help your pet have a long and healthy life. How often your pet should visit the veterinarian depends on its age. If you need veterinary services in or around Perkins, OK, contact our team at Perkins Veterinary Clinic. We are a full-service animal hospital and our team is available 365 days a year to meet all your pet health needs.

Dogs

  • Puppies: When your dog is a puppy, it needs to visit the veterinarian more often than it will as an adult dog. Your dog should start its visits at around 8 weeks old and begin receiving puppy vaccinations. You will need a second visit a month later to get the second round of vaccinations. Between 16-20 weeks old your puppy will get last round of puppy vaccinations. The last visit for this first year will be for neutering or spaying which we strongly recommend.
  • Adult dogs: Your adult dog will usually visit the vet once per year for a wellness visit and vaccination updates.
  • Senior dogs: Senior dogs should see the vet twice per year. As your dog ages it is more likely to develop problems and the earlier they are addressed the better.

Cats

  • Kittens: Kittens follow a schedule similar to puppies for the first year. They need to have scheduled visits for vaccinations and to get spayed or neutered. The first visit should occur between around 8 weeks.
  • Adult cats: An adult cat should visit the vet once per year for a wellness exam and to update vaccinations.
  • Senior Cats: Like senior dogs, elder cats should visit the vet twice per year to get a pet exam.
