Common Christmas Holiday Dangers for your Pets


Pointsetta(Euphorbia pulcherrima)- has a thick irritant sap, is not as toxic as most think, usually causes vomiting , diarrhea, anorhexia


 Mistle toe 43 species of mistletoe are present in North America, but only eight species in the genus Phoradendron are of toxicologic significance   - substances can inhibit protein synthesis, similar to Ricin a toxin in castor beans and used in chemical warefare,   Mistle Toe can kill the pet it can affect heart rate, pressure and contractility, and cause  GI upset. Short term affect are vomit,  diarrhea, hypotension, cardiovascular collapse, long term can be defects in protein synthesis ie. Edema, ascites, etc      


Holly (Ilex aquifolium.)-salivation, vomiting, anorexia, and diarrhea.  Animals may also shake their heads and smack their lips

Christmas cactus(Schlumbergera truncata)-vomit, diarrhea, annorhexia,  skin and eye irritation
 Christmas trees- irritating sap, GI upset, vomit, diarrhea


Peace lilly(Spathiphyllum species)- GI upset


 Easter lilly(Lilium longiflorum), tiger lilies (Lilium tigrinum), Japanese show lilies (Lilium hybridum), rubrum lilies (Lilium rubrum), numerous lily hybrids, and day lilies (Hemerocallis species) are associated with renal failure in cats. All parts of the lily plant are considered toxic, and ingestion of as little as one leaf in a cat can be fatal.

 Macadamia Nuts- Macadamia nuts are commonly used in many cookies and candies. However, they can cause problems for your canine companion. These nuts have caused weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia in dogs. Signs usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and last approximately 12 to 48 hours.


ChocolateChocolate, Coffee, Caffeine- These products all contain substances called methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee and in the nuts of an extract used in some sodas. When ingested by pets, methylxanthines can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Note that darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. White chocolate has the lowest level of methylxanthines, while baking chocolate contains the highest


 Tree Life tree nutrient and similar products are usually nontoxic because most manufacturers are aware of the pet issue, however if a clients pet has consumed some of this water, they should heck out that specific product through the manufacturers website or poison control
 Tree tinsel- liniar FB in cats


Light strings- electrocution, look for burns in mouth, on tongue, lips etc
